Introduction

Mason Murphy used to run the wings.

Back when he was growing up in Mount Pleasant, Utah, a place where everyone knew your name and sports were a way of life, he was just another small-town athlete chasing a soccer ball. He started like most kids around there, playing city league on rough fields with simple goals and big dreams. There were no elite club teams, no big exposure, just a love for the game and a willingness to play whenever he could. In those early years, Mason played winger, running up and down the field, learning the game one touch at a time.

Everything changed in seventh grade. That was when a local club team was finally put together, and it was also when Mason stepped into the goal for the first time. Most players avoid that position, but something about it felt right. A coach saw potential in him. Mason had always been the kid diving, sliding, throwing his body around without hesitation, so the switch made sense. At first, the adrenaline of the position was intimidating, but now it is what he loves most.

The Story

It was not easy. His team struggled. They lost games 4–0, sometimes worse, and mercy rules ended games early. For many players, that kind of experience would have been enough to walk away. Mason thought about it. There were nights he walked off the field completely devastated, especially in those early years playing city league teams against stronger club competition. It would have been easy to quit, but he didn’t, “The desire to be better,” he says, is what kept him showing up. Even when results were not there, he trusted that eventually, through hard work, things would change.

He trained constantly, five days a week, sometimes more, playing two games every week. It was repetition after repetition, diving, catching, improving footwork. While others measured success by wins, Mason measured it by growth. Behind the scenes, his commitment went even deeper. Early nights, waking up at 6:30, tracking meals, lifting in the gym three times a week, training four to five days, stretching daily, and constantly studying the game. No matter the season, he added extra goalkeeper sessions with a coach who believed in him from day one. Discipline, to him, became simple: doing the little things consistently, even when you don’t feel like it.

Still, the journey was not smooth. As he began to look toward higher levels, it became clear he was behind. Compared to established club players, he was overlooked and labeled an underdog. Instead of discouraging him, it fueled him. “I had to start my own journey,” he says. “Work harder and create my own path.”

Over time, things began to shift. The losses did not disappear overnight, but Mason’s performances started to stand out. He put up incredible numbers, games with 30 or even 40-plus saves. Teams that once scored easily began to struggle just to get past him. Then came a breakthrough. The summer before eighth grade, Mason was invited to play in a varsity tournament. For a small-town player with limited exposure, that opportunity meant everything. It was the first moment he realized something bigger. “It felt like I had a purpose,” he says. “Like I was going to be great.” His team placed third, but more importantly, Mason proved it to himself.

From there, he stayed involved with the high school program, accelerating his development while keeping the same mindset that nothing was guaranteed. So when freshman year came, he didn’t wait, he earned it. Mason stepped in and took the starting varsity position from a senior who had held it for four years. It came with pressure. Mentally, he had to perform at a level he had never experienced, and socially, not everyone supported the change. But he trusted his preparation.

Sophomore year was when his name started to spread. He recorded 303 saves, leading not just his division but ranking first in the nation across all classifications from 1A to 6A. It was a milestone moment that reflected years of work through losing seasons. “It showed my grit,” he says. “But at the same time, it came from a hard season. That part was tough.”

By his junior year, he earned First Team All-State honors in 3A and continued to rank among the nation’s top goalkeepers. But even then, adversity followed. In a crucial game, he strained his groin and missed time, then played the rest of the season below full strength. The pressure mounted, but he pushed through. That experience taught him something success never could. Failure reveals what needs to be fixed and forces growth.

As a goalkeeper, pressure is constant. One mistake can change everything, but Mason embraces it. “I chose this position,” he says. “When I’m at my best, I can save my team.” After bad games, he studies his mistakes, replays them, and breaks them down. Every failure becomes a blueprint for improvement. That mindset is what separates him. Not just talent, but a relentless pursuit to get better, especially when things get hard.

After his junior season, he joined a Shooters P1 team, stepping into a higher level of competition. It brought new challenges, but also confirmation that he belonged.

Now in his senior year, Mason plays with a different kind of confidence. Not just from success, but from everything it took to get there. His journey, as he describes it, is simple: “It’s been a long, difficult road, but through the struggle, it’s had its moments of success.”

When people see his stats, they see the numbers. They don’t see the years of mercy-rule losses, the times he was considered a subpar goalkeeper, or the moments he felt behind. They don’t see the work.

Soccer has shaped who he is, a leader, someone dependable, and someone who understands discipline, consistency, and effort. As a captain, he has learned how to lead, and as a competitor, he has learned how to endure.

Looking Ahead

Now, he is chasing something bigger: a region title and a state championship. After years of losing seasons, his team finally has the chance to do something great. Beyond that, his path continues. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Paris, France, he plans to return, play college soccer, and pursue a professional career.

For anyone watching from a small town, wondering if they have the same opportunities as everyone else, Mason’s message is clear: “You do have the opportunities. They just aren’t as easy to find.” You will have to work harder. You will have to create your own path. And if you are losing right now, those losses will teach you more than winning ever could.
